Energy Scouts know and recognise potential savings

ASSMANN apprentices win Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) competition

The European Union has defined ambitious climate protection targets that must be reached by 2020. The intrepid plan will only work if everyone contributes, companies especially. The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce has launched a competition for apprentices as part of the German SME Initiative Energy Transition and Climate Protection. Apprentices are invited to complete a course to become Energy Scouts. They attend workshops to learn how companies can introduce smarter energy management. Once qualified, they suggest improvements in the companies in which they work.

Clearly a win/win situation. The company identifies potential savings, while the apprentices acquire valuable skills for their careers.

Compressed air leakage and the road to Berlin

Our apprentices took part in the Energy Scouts project last year as well. They discovered that ASSMANN could save a lot of energy – ultimately money as well – by reducing the leakage of compressed air in production. Altogether the company could reduce expenditure by around €20,000 – per year! Our apprentices and their colleagues from three other companies in the region were recently invited to the awards ceremony of the national competition in Berlin due to their great idea and especially their exciting presentation.

They met up with the winners from other regions, shared their thoughts and received their certificates. The trio even met Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks and Achim Drecks, Deputy General Manager at the German Chamber of Chamber and Commerce.

“Protecting the environment is extremely important at ASSMANN”, emphasises Andreas Fipp, Head of Industrial Engineering and Environmental Management. “As Energy Scouts, our apprentices make an essential contribution to helping the company progress in this area. We can only benefit from implementing other environmental protection measures as soon as possible.”

Already signed up for 2017

Who wouldn’t be delighted to have Energy Scouts on hand if they produce such amazing results? Our thoughts exactly, so we signed them up for the next competition in 2017 as well. Our four new Energy Scouts pitched their ideas on the topic of “sawdust extraction” to the IHK in early June.

And again their presentation was convincing! So the next national awards ceremony in Berlin will feature ASSMANN apprentices as well.
