There is no question of the importance of the driver. All kinds of goods – provisions such as furniture, packages and clothing – must be transported from A to B. There have been few alternatives for HGV shipping to date. Yet there are hardly any applicants for HGV driver positions. Many companies throughout Germany are currently confronted with a driver shortage. "Employers have long been asked to create the best conditions for attracting both potential employees of the company, as well as offering their own employees an inviting place to work.", says Alexander Neudorf, HR manager at ASSMANN Büromöbel. "We have already achieved some success in recent years, thanks to the principle of 'value created when appreciated'". This includes comprehensive annual staff appraisals, redesigning the recreation rooms where we have installed table football, lounge furniture and table tennis tables as well as meeting points in the production area, among other things." ASSMANN Büromöbel is well positioned by offering the opportunity for its employees to work from home, in addition to many other benefits thanks to flexible working models. It is important to create framework conditions that attract potential applicants who are currently on the labour market. There are other ways of doing this, than by simply offering a good salary with additional benefits and career opportunities. The compatibility of work life and family is becoming an increasingly important factor for many people, and is often a reason for ruling out a potential employer. "Free weekends, day trips that last up to one or two days, and a good working atmosphere are especially well received by our colleagues on the road," reports Neudorf. "Unfortunately, this is rarely found in the labour market for HGV drivers."
